Intro to IRP Registration
Starting out with the trucking business, it is very common to get license plates on your truck. The same process goes for our own personal vehicles which are pretty simple. But in the trucking business, things are not quite simple as it seems. So, in this blog, we’ll go through all the 3w’s ( who, what, and where ) of the IRP registration.
International Registration Plan:
IRP constitutes an agreement between all the states of the United States and the provinces of Canada. If you sign up for commercially-owned trucks, you must pay for fees in each state it passes through. The amount you pay is determined by the number of miles you travel in every state.
When do I require the apportioned plates (IRP)?
Before jumping into the types of license plates, we should know the need for IRP. So, you are required to carry an apportioned plate if you are operating in more than one jurisdiction as well as if your vehicle(s) are in compliance with one or one or:
- The weight of the license for power units is 26,001 pounds. or more
- The power unit is equipped with at least two axles, regardless of weights that are licensed
- The power unit is utilized in conjunction, and the combination weighs 26,001 pounds. or heavier
- The power unit is responsible for commercial intrastate transportation in an area that is not Missouri regardless of license weight
Types of License Plates:
There are two primary kinds of license plates that are suitable for commercial vehicles with GVWRs of more than 10,000 lbs. There are two types of license plates: base plates and apportioned plates. If your truck is not going to leave the state and you are a resident of the state, a basic plate is the only thing you require, and the procedure is similar to the process of the registration of your vehicle. If you plan to be traveling through multiple states the process becomes more complicated as you be subject to the rules under the International Registration Plan, usually called by its acronym IRP or the apportioned registration.
How To Go About IRP Account
You need to create or set up an IRP account within your state of residence. The following section will give you more details on how to go about doing this.
In the initial set-up process, you’ll need to fill in some application forms, submit evidence of residency, supply documents such as a copy of your 2290 certificate or emission certificate, if required, and pay the cost of registration.
There are some variations between states so be sure to contact your state office to inquire about the forms you have to fill in and the documents you’ll need to provide to satisfy the state’s requirements. You are able to usually download the forms on their website to ensure that you are prepared when you go to their office to set it all up.

Each state has its own department which manages IRP registration. Find contact information for every state by visiting IRP online and searching for your state.
